NBA: Spurs Fall to Pelicans, Will Face the Clippers in the First Round

After streaking to straight 11 wins and posting a remarkable 24-3 record after the All-Star break, the San Antonio Spurs succumbed to a motivated and desperate New Orleans Pelicans team on the final day of the NBA’s regular season. With the loss, the Spurs relinquished the number two seed to the Houston Rockets in the standings.

Spurs vs. Pelicans Highlights (Last Game of the Regular Season 2015)

Because of the complicated Western Conference standings, the defending champs tumbled down to number six in the standings, setting up a showdown with the Los Angeles Clippers. This is an intriguing match up because of two things:

  1. The Spurs swept the Clippers 4-0 when they faced each other in the Western Conference semifinals in 2012.
  2. Although the Spurs are somewhat favored in 2015, they will be playing without home-court advantage.

Although it’s easy to think that the Spurs can easily handle the Clippers, the fact that the champs are a little older and looking for another Finals run for the third straight year is going to be daunting to say the least. Another interesting thing to take note is, whether or not, Chris Paul is finally ready to take his team to another level. Remember, Paul, despite his individual accolades has not reached the Western Conference Finals and has not defeated the Spurs in a series. Will this be the year that the Paul and the Clippers finally beat the Spurs? Stay tuned for the Spurs vs. Clippers preview in my next post.
